The officer demanded a bribe to not expose a mistake in the annual report made by an auditor for a private company owner.
Coimbatore: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department nabbed a commercial tax officer red-handed in Coimbatore, on Tuesday.
A private company owner lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Department stating that the Commercial Tax officer demanded a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh from him. The auditor had recorded the annual report of the year 2014-15 with a mistake in the financial records. The tax officer reportedly demanded a bribe to not expose the mistake and avoid a penalty of Rs. 15 lakh on the company.
The Anti-Corruption and Vigilance squad accompanied the private company owner and when he was handing over the demanded amount to the Commercial Tax officer, the squad stepped in and caught the officer red-handed.
