Employees working under ASHA scheme under Central government and the doorstep health care scheme protest to raise wages in Valparai

Coimbatore: Moodys PHC and the Government Primary Health Centers in the Sholayar Nagar area employ 45 staff in Valparai under the Prevention of Infectious Diseases Prevention and Treatment Scheme under the Asha Act of the Central Government.

2,600 people across Tamil Nadu are working on this project. For the past three years, they have been maintaining records of hygiene awareness in the Valparai area and door-to-door diagnoses of colds and infections. In addition, they were given Rs. 10 per house as per the number of houses where they were tested and given tablets.

The Tamil Nadu government last month announced the doorstep healthcare scheme. Accordingly, the employees have been appointed by the Valparai Municipality on the basis of a salary of Rs. 4500 per month and the duties of the employees working under the Asha scheme of the Central Government have been transferred to them.

Also Vani who worked under Asha scheme was not paid for 2 months in a row. They protested in front of the Valparai Government Primary Health Center demanding permanent employment and job security for those who have been working for the lowest wages for the past three years. And they are engaged in a sit-in protest at the Valparai Government Primary Health Center until a better solution is found for them.
