Lion-tailed macaques run amok shops in Valparai leaving shopkeepers highly frustrated.
Coimbatore: There are over 500 rare species of lion-tailed macaques in the Valparai area of Coimbatore district which are being protected by the Forest Department and private voluntary organizations.
Lion-tailed macaques have thus become a common sight in the forest at Puthuthottam in Valparai and have recently forayed into residential areas as well.
More than 30 lion-tailed macaques entered the Valparai residential area, damaging flower pots in houses, climbed banana trees in house compounds, ate mangoes and wandered about.
These macaques also disturbed banana fruit stalls, grocery stores and dairy shops near the old bus stand in Valparai. They also scampered across roads randomly leaving mototrists in a panic.
Locals and shopkeepers were highly inconvenienced and urged Forest Department officials to chase them into the forest.
