Coimbatore: About 15 people with spinal cord injuries petitioned the Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran at the District Collectorate with their families for a house on subsidy through the Slum Clearance Board. The District Collector sympathetically heard the grievances of all those who explained about their spinal cord disability. They also demanded that the Government provide a monthly stipend of Rs. 1000 for caretakers of the differently-abled as well as Rs.1500 for the differently-abled themselves, and that the subsidy-based housing be provided on the ground floor.
'Having to live with a spinal cord injury, our livelihood has now been further affected during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Therefore, on economic grounds, we demand the creation of immediate employment for the differently-abled in both public and private sectors.'
The Pollachi Sub-Collector, Thakare Shubham Dnyandeorao and the District Disability Welfare Center Officer, Vasantha Ramakumar were also present.
