'Panchayat funds have been wasted and people crowd when water is being delivered through vehicles.
Coimbatore: The central government has launched the 'Jal Jeevan Mission' to provide clean and adequate drinking water to all households across the country by 2024. In this project, in Anaimalai Union, Subbegavundanputhur, Ramanamuthaliputhur, Jallipatti and Somanthurai panchayats were selected.
Funds were allocated to each panchayat, and work began one and a half years ago, including the laying of pipes and the installation of round wells. In Ramanamuthaliputhur, Jallipatti and Somanthurai panchayats, the project is progressing at a snail's pace. As the project has not been completed for six months,
Many paid the deposit and find it difficult to get a new drinking water connection. To complete the project, work on setting up circular wells is pending. As a result, the panchayat administration is facing severe difficulties in providing drinking water to the people. Water is being distributed for drinking and non-drinking use through rental tractors and trucks.
Thus, panchayat funds are wasted. People are hence crowding when water is being delivered through vehicles. The district administration is urged to take steps to expedite the completion of the 'Jal Jeevan Mission' project to avoid people suffering from lack of water.
