Coimbatore: The District Superintendent of Police, S Selvanagarathinam stated that out of the 951 death cases recorded in Coimbatore in 2021, 480 are suicides.

The Coimbatore Police Department has launched an organization called 'Vidiyal' to help people dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts.

While briefing the media, the District SP stated, "The cases filed in the last five and a half years in Coimbatore, suicides recorded are at a higher rate and particularly in the year 2021. Thus far, we have recorded over 480 deaths due to suicide."

Survey reports state that in the last two years, most suicides were due to issues within the families. In order to clamp the high number of suicides, 'Vidiyal' has been formed with psychiatrists, doctors and police department joining forces to offer help to people who suffer from mental health issues. The counseling centre will be operational round-the-clock and the numbers through which people can seek counselling are 04222300999, or through WhatsApp 7708100100 and police control room number 100. Once contacted, the police team as well as the 50 counsellors available assist the individual and help in counselling.
