21-year-old donates organs, gives hope to needy persons

Karthik Banakar, the grandson of BG Banakar, former speaker of the legislative assembly and nephew of MLA Umesh Banakar, gave new life to a 45-year-old man from Chikkaballapur, suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy. He had been waiting for a heart for three years under the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Organ Transplant (ZCCK).

Not only his heart, Karthik, 21, donated his liver, kidneys and cornea as well. His liver has been kept at the Health Care Global (HCG) Hospital, where Karthik was admitted for organ donation. His kidneys have been kept under ZCCK's custody.

On September 21, Karthik fell 50 feet from the Hebbal flyover, an accident in which he sustained injuries all over the body. His friends rushed him to Bangalore Baptist Hospital, Hebbal, where he received initial treatment.

Mrutyunjaya Banakar, his father, said: "Later, we shifted him to Sakra World Hospital, where we came to know he had sustained critical injuries in the brain and the spinal cord. He was kept on ventilation for three days. Despite attempts by doctors for almost a week, we lost our son. He was declared brain dead on Wednesday."

"While waiting for our son's recovery, we came to know from the hospital authorities that there are several critical patients waiting for an organ and all of them can get a new life if they receive new organs," the father said.

"We know about high mortality due to low availability of organs in our state. So we decided to donate my son's organs. I wanted Karthik to serve people this way," said Mrutyunjaya .

A green corridor was created in the evening to carry the heart from HCG Hospital to MS Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre. A team of senior doctors performed the successful heart transplant.
