Coimbatore South constituency Hindustan Janata Party candidate Ragul Gandhi's petition on discrepancy in vote counting accepted by Election Commission
Coimbatore: Even as the Assembly election vote counting was underway on May 2 at the GCT campus for the 10 constituencies in Coimbatore district, it was a nail-biting finish between BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan and Makkal Needhi Maiam Chief, Kamal Haasan for Coimbatore South constituency. The margin of votes to decide the winner was narrowing and finally at 7 pm, BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan was declared the winner after the last round of counting by 1,728 votes.
Following this, Ragul Gandhi, an independent candidate contesting on behalf of the Hindustan Janata Party, had petitioned the District Collector to hold a recount in the South constituency.
He filed a petition at the cell of the Tamil Nadu Election Commission alleging that the victory of the BJP candidate was suspicious.
The Election Commission, which received the petition has assured him that appropriate action will be taken. The incident has reportedly caused a stir among the candidates who had contested in the Coimbatore South constituency.
