Elephant Jayamalyatha to be sent back to its town as it suffers with its mahout in jail
Coimbatore: Jayamalyatha to be sent back as it suffers as its mahout is in jail. The video of Jayamalyatha being beaten and tortured by an elephant mahout from Srivilliputhur at the Elephant Rejuvenation Camp at Mettupalayam has gone viral on social media. Following this, the mahout was arrested and imprisoned. Since then there have been behavioral changes in Srivilliputhur elephant Jayamalyatha. Following the medical examination, the doctors decided to send Jayamalyatha elephant from the Mettupalayam Elephant Rejuvenation Camp to the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple as per the recommendation of the medical team.
Elephants Rejuvenation Camp started on Feb. 8at Mettupalayam, Coimbatore District and 26 elephants participated from Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry states. On Feb. 21, a female elephant named 'Jayamalyatha' belonging to the Srivilliputhur Andal temple was beaten and tortured by Mahout Vinilkumar and his assistant Sivaprasad. Foresters filed a case against mahout and his aide, both of whom were arrested and jailed.
Elephant Mahout Subramani of Thiruchendur temple was temporarily appointed to look after the elephant. Due to the absence of mahouts who have been caring for the elephant for a long time, the elephant began to have behavioral changes. Therefore, it has been decided to accept the recommendation of the Medical Committee and the Hindu Charities Department and send the Jayamalyatha elephant back to the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple from the camp. Arrangements for this are being made by the camp authorities.
