Hindusthan College Hostel Kitchen Suspended for 14 Days

The Food Safety Department has ordered the temporary suspension of operations at the hostel kitchen of Hindusthan College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore for 14 days following an inspection that found hygiene-related deficiencies. Improvement notices were also issued to the 13 private colleges inspected across the district.

The inspections were conducted following complaints from students regarding the quality and hygiene of food served at college hostels. Based on the direction of the District Collector, a team led by District Food Safety Officer Anuradha inspected hostels and eateries attached to 13 private colleges for three days from August 10.

According to the Food Safety Department, several deficiencies were identified during the inspections. These included the absence of proper kitchen maintenance records, lack of medical fitness certificates for people involved in cooking and serving food, and inadequate food safety training and certification for food handlers.

The inspection teams also found deficiencies related to pest-control measures, proper storage of food items and waste disposal practices at the inspected establishments, officials said.

During the inspection, the hostel kitchen of Hindusthan College of Arts and Science City Campus was found to have hygiene-related deficiencies. Following the inspection, officials ordered the temporary suspension of the kitchen's operations for 14 days under Section 32 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

An Improvement Notice was issued in the name of Neelaveni, the person nominated in Form IX for the establishment. The notice mentions Food Licence No. 12426003000790 and cites Section 32 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Following the suspension of the hostel kitchen's operations, the college management has reportedly declared a holiday for its students.

The Food Safety Department has given the inspected institutions 14 days to rectify the deficiencies identified during the inspections. Officials also said inspections would continue at other colleges across Coimbatore district.

It is to be remembered that students of HICAS had continuously protested against the administration highlighting the lack of hygiene in the cooking and substandard food quality.
