Coimbatore: Police are investigating the theft of Rs 40,000 from an old woman at an ATM near the Pollachi Gandhi statue by a unidentified person who pretended to withdraw money for her.
Ramasamy is a retired government school teacher from Achipatti Cheran nagar. His wife Mahalakshmi (65) went to the SBI Bank ATM near the Gandhi statue this afternoonto withdraw money from her bank account. She asked for help from a person nearby and the person obtained Mahalakshmi's ATM PIN number and said that there was no money available in the bank.
He then gave away his ATM card instead of Mahalakshmi's ATM card. Shortly afterwards Mahalakshmi received a text message saying that Rs 40,000 had been withdrawn from Mahalakshmi's bank account. She was shocked and lodged a complaint at the Pollachi East police station and police are investigating the unidentified person's ATM card and CCTV recordings.
