Transport department remove Bumpers from four wheelers in surprise check in Coimbatore

The transport authorities are now involved with the tasks of identifying the cars with bumpers and ensure the process of it's removal.



Coimbatore: A case in Highcourt was filed against the usage of bumpers in cars in the year 2017 as they cause more damages when hit in an accident and also makes the sensors in the car weak causing failure in airbag deployment.

Sources say that the recent gruesome accident near Dharmapuri where over a dozen vehicles were involved in the accident was the one to tip the scales with the transportation department. The Highcourt ordered the removal of these bumpers earlier in January this year but since the onset of Covid-19 pandemic the removal process had been delayed.



The transport authorities are now involved with the tasks of identifying the cars with bumpers and ensure the process of it's removal.



According to the court verdict the central transport authorities in Coimbatore were involved in a vehicle check near the VOC ground and removed the bumpers from the cars which had bumpers on it along with a fine of 500 rupees.



During a press meet regarding this Saravanan, Central Transportation Officer for Coimbatore South said that due actions are taken by the transport authorities to remove the bumpers from the four wheelers by identifying them and this removal of bumpers will be monitored regularly.

He said that this act is a decision has been made with the approval of Transport Ministry, Highcourt, Traffic Commissioner, District Collector and other government authorities in the Thasildar Office.

Officer Saravanan also said that a lot of damages are being caused by the vehicles which has bumpers and that sometimes they even cause deaths. He so said that the sensors in the cars seldom stop working because of the bumpers which causes malfunction in Airbags. He also said that the bumpers increase the total weight of the vehicle which causes accidents.

Further during the press meet officer Saravanan said that the fines are being charged from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000 and people who violate these can also be imprisoned for six months by law.

He also said that the details regarding the bumper manufacturers will be bought to the attention of the government and actions will also be taken for motorcycle which was extra spare parts.
