According to police reports, Rashid (40) of Lajpat Rai Road, Ramnagar, Coimbatore got acquainted to Francis Xavier Selvaraj (55), of Thanappa Mudaliar Road in Madurai. Rashid told Francis Xavier Selvaraj that he was going to open his own tea shop. During a conversation, Rashid has told of his idea to open a tea shop in the city. Menawhile, Francis has told Rashid that he has acquaintances at the Indian Oil Corporation office near Nava India on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore, and that he would talk to them and get permissionto set up a tea shop in the premises.

Subsequently, Francis Xavier Selvaraj also asked for an advance of Rs 5 lakh for the purpose. Believing his offer to be true, Rashid paid Rs 5 lakh to Francis Xavier on May 4, last year.
