Coimbatore: Police have arrested a man for allegedly swindling Rs 5 lakh promising a person to help him set up a tea shop inside a central government office in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: Police have arrested a man for allegedly swindling Rs 5 lakh promising a person to help him set up a tea shop inside a central government office in Coimbatore.
According to police reports, Rashid (40) of Lajpat Rai Road, Ramnagar, Coimbatore got acquainted to Francis Xavier Selvaraj (55), of Thanappa Mudaliar Road in Madurai. Rashid told Francis Xavier Selvaraj that he was going to open his own tea shop. During a conversation, Rashid has told of his idea to open a tea shop in the city. Menawhile, Francis has told Rashid that he has acquaintances at the Indian Oil Corporation office near Nava India on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore, and that he would talk to them and get permissionto set up a tea shop in the premises.
Subsequently, Francis Xavier Selvaraj also asked for an advance of Rs 5 lakh for the purpose. Believing his offer to be true, Rashid paid Rs 5 lakh to Francis Xavier on May 4, last year. After taking the money, Francis allegedly forged the documents and told Rashid that officials would soon contact him regarding his shop approval. As he did not receive any calls, Rashid fell suspicious and questioned Francis, but got no proper response.
Rashid then said he was not interested in opening a tea shop any more and asked Francis to return his money back. However, Francis seem to have avoided Rashid's calls. Following this, Rashid filed a case at Kattoor police station.
Upon investigation, police bookedFrancis Xavier Selvaraj under appropriate sections and lodged him in the prison.
