Corporation officials issue notice to church-owned dilapidated building in Coimbatore

Coimbatore:Coimbatore Corporation officials have issued a notice banning the use of an old building owned by St. Michael Church on Big Bazaar Road, Coimbatore here, on Thursday.

District Collector K. Rajamani and Corporation Commissioner Kumaravel Pandian have directed officials to identify old dilapidated buildings in Coimbatore and issue notices to them. Officials were also engaged in demolishing such buildings that pose high risk to the people.

As the the northeast monsoon has set over Coimbatore, such weak buildings might collapse and cause loss of lives and property, the officials told.

During an inspection, Corporation authorities yesterday inspected the premises belonging to St. Michael Church in the Big Bazaar area, under the Coimbatore Central Zone. Later, the officials put up notices banning an old building belonging to the church that was identified as unstable.



The notice warned that the building should no longer be used. A corporation official said, "There are a total of 40 shops on the ground floor and first floor of this building. Of these, 10 shops are operational.



The rest of the shops are closed. Notice has been issued as the building is unstable."
