Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Ukkadam-Athupalam road is the main road to Pollachi and the state of Kerala via Kuniyamuthur.
Construction work on the 1.9 km flyover between Ukkadam and Athupalam began in April 2018 in order to ease the traffic congestion on the road.
In the first phase, Rs 216 crore had been allocated for the overbridge work between Ukkadam and the Karumbukkadai and 55 pillars have been erected up to the Karumbukkadai and the work of laying the runway is 90 percent complete.
Work is also in progress to set up a roundabout on the flyover near the Ukkadam bus stand. Ukkadam traffic was diverted due to overbridge works at Athupalam. Only two-wheelers were allowed under the flyover between Ukkadam and Karumbukkadai. Meanwhile, overbridge works between Ukkadam and Karumbukkadai have been completed and roads have been laid at the bottom of the flyover to allow cars and two-wheelers to pass.
A huge sand dune near the Karumbukkadai was very disruptive to traffic because of which motorists were facing great difficulty. The Coimbatore district administration and the police were informed about this.

Following this, the sand dune was removed.
Social activist Abdul Hakeem said, "The demand was for the removal of the sand dune. Immediate action was taken. Currently two-wheelers and four-wheelers travel on the road with ease. This will greatly benefit the people of Coimbatore. On behalf of the people, I would like to thank the Coimbatore District Police, the District Administration and the Corporation".
