Coimbatore: Coimbatore District Road Safety Association has placed a flex banner stating that the road to Urumandampalayam is missing. The banner had been placed in condemnation of the negligent attitude of the Highways Department.

On the road from GN Mills in Coimbatore to Urumandampalayam, Udayampalayam and Ganapathy, pits were dug on behalf of the TWAD Board for the installation of giant pipes for the Athikadavu drinking water project and they remain unclosed for a long time. The Highways Department closed the pits due to a series of protests by the Coimbatore District Road Safety Association and the Urumandampalayam public, but the road is bumpy because tar has not been laid on it.

Also the newly laid drinking water pipeline broke and huge pits were dug in many places to repair the damage. These pits remain unclosed in the middle of the road for several days. When the people of the area asked TWAD board officials about this, they said that they had paid the necessary tax to the Highway Department for repairing the road.

The North Highways Department blamed the TWAD board stating that they dug more than they should have.

The Coimbatore District Road Safety Association along with the public and motorists ofUrumandampalayamput up a flex stating that the road is missing from GN Mills to Urumandampalayam. The incident where a woman broke coconuts and lit camphor with betel leaf, fruit and flowers and worshiped Bhooma Devi for the safety of people caused a stir there.

Coimbatore District Road Safety Association Secretary Devendran said that with the onset of monsoon, rain water stagnates in potholes and accidents occur. He said the road is unusable and urged the Highway Department should repair the roads immediately before any casualties are reported.
