Coimbatore: Coimbatore police have arrested a youth and his accomplice who allegedly stole jewellery from women in a novel manner.
Balaganesh and Kanimozhi (30), a couple, live on Gandhipuram Third Street. Yesterday, while Kanimozhi was walking through Gandhipuram, a youth on a motorcycle stopped Kanimozhi. Speaking to Kanimozhi, he said, "There is a lot of looting in this area, so it is very dangerous to wear the chain. Keep it safe in your handbag." Kanimozhi, believing that what he was saying was true, took off the 3 sovereign chain and placed it in her handbag.
Subsequently, the young man asked Kanimozhi where she was going and she told him that she was on her way to a private hospital in Avarampalayam to which the young man kindly said, "I'm going to the same area. Get on my vehicle and I'll drop you off there."
The young man's speech gave confidence to Kanimozhi who got on his motorcycle. The young man took her handbag and placed it in front of him saying it inconvenienced him while riding. On reaching Avarampalayam, Kanimozhi was dropped off and the man fled away on his motorcycle at lightning speed with the handbag.
A shell-shocked Kanimozhi lodged a complaint at the Kattoor police station. While the police were searching for the man involved in the latest robbery, they found a young man was wandering around the same area in a suspicious manner.
Investigation revealed that his name was Karthik (20) and that he was targeting women who had lost their husbands, talking to them in a kind manner and then robbing jewellery from them in a novel manner.
It was also revealed that Hariprasad (36) was his accomplice. Following this, the Kattoor police registered a case against the two and arrested them. They also confiscated the jewellery from them.
Also, a series of investigations are underway into how many women the two have stolen from.
