Coimbatore: With the onset of the northeast monsoon, dengue season has set in across large parts of the country.
Officials here in the city have geared up dengue preventive measures, as COVID-19 and the mosquito-borne disease have overlapping symptoms and can pose huge challenge to the healthcare infrastructure.
With the COVID-19 outbreak already wreaking havoc in the lives of people, the health care department is cautious to control the dengue spread, as simultaneous infections could take a toll on people. According to the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), 1,36,422 dengue cases were diagnosed in 2019 and an estimated 132 people died.
As COVID-19 and Dengue have similar symptoms such as high fever, headache and body pain, Health experts opine that dengue season may aggravate the COVID-19 situation as both viruses may supplement each other.
As of today, four children including a 2-year-old girl from Coimbatore has been admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital, while a 4-year-old boy from Tirupur, a 3-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy from Erode are being treated at various private hospitals in the city, for dengue treatment.
All the four children are stable and are recovering. Doctors are closelymonitoring their situation, a health official said.
