Coimbatore: Coimbatore Airport management has decided to support green energy. In line with this, installation of 50 KW rooftop solar system will be commencing soon in the airport premises.

Coimbatore International Airport serves the aviation needs of people from seven districts. Annually, 30 lakh passengers use both the domestic and international services provided by various airlines. In spite of the huge delay in airport expansion, the airport continues to witness a steady growth. Considering the growing electricity demands at the airport and also in a bid to protect the environment, the airport management has started focussing on green energy.

Coimbatore International Airport Director R. Mahalingam said, "Thecivil aviation sector has slowly started to come out from the big impact caused by the 'Covid-19' outbreak. At present, more services are being added in the domestic sector. Apart from this, international airlines such as Royal Brunei and Air Arabia continue to provide their services to Coimbatore. We hope more services will be added soon.

Considering the growing demand and the need to protect the environment, we have decided to focus on the renewable energy sector. There is good potential for solar power generation, but the lack of sufficient space is a big problem. Therefore, we have decided to use a rooftop solar system. To start with, solar panels will be installed on the rooftop of the office building which would help us generate 50 KW of electricity. The work for this will commence soon."

He added that, "This is just a beginning. Lack of space will not stop us from going green. If we cannot generate more power, we have the option to buy renewable energy. Hence we would be taking that initiative as well in the upcoming days."
