Coimbatore: A 56-year-old man along with his family members attempted suicide, allegedly due to financial issues. The family took the drastic step on Wednesday at their residence close to the foothills of Marudhamalai temple, here. Three of the family died on the spot, while a 19-year-old is reported critical.
Coimbatore: A 56-year-old man along with his family members attempted suicide, allegedly due to financial issues. Sivamurugan (56) and Vaira Rani and two daughters Yuvasree (22) and Hema (19) were residents of Leprosy Colony located near the foothills of Marudhamalai here.
According to police reports, Sivamurugan was running a chit fund company. As many of his customers failed to pay their monthly installments on time, Sivamurugan struggled to keep up his commitments to repay other customers.As he failed to honour his commitments, the customers allegedly harrssed him to repay the money.
To tackle this and boost his revenue, hestarted to sell milk packets. As it did not yield him sufficient revenue, delays in repayment to his customers continued and many of his chit customers entered into disputes with him, demanding immediate repayment.
Depressed over the situation, Sivamurugan allegedly took the extreme step and consumed poison along with his family members, on Wednesday night. Preliminary reports say, the family mixed ammonium fertiliser with bananas and consumed them.
As none from the family were seen this morning and the house remained locked from inside, the neighbours fell suspicious and broke into the house. To their shock, they found Sivamurugan, Vaira Rani and Yuvasree dead and Hema battling for her life.
The neighbours immediately informed the Vadavalli police station and rushed Hema to Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment.
The incident has left the relatives and neighbours in immense grief and shock. The Vadavalli police have registered a case and are investigating the alleged suicide.
