Coimbatore: Upto Rs. 6 lakhs saved by using solar panels at Coimbatore Railway Station
Coimbatore: Railway officials informed that upto Rs. 6 lakhs saved by using solar panels at Coimbatore Railway Station. Coimbatore Railway Station is the second largest railway station in terms of revenue and trains. More than 70 trains ply here daily from other states and districts.
Thousands of passengers travel through it. At present trains are operated only to certain areas including Chennai and Mayiladuthurai due to fear of coronavirus. Coimbatore railway station has 6 platforms. There are also tunnels, including escalators, for the public.
Coimbatore railway station requires about 2,100 units of electricity per day. And this leads to higher electricity charges for the railway station. To avoid this, solar panels with a capacity of 100 kW were installed on the roof of the Coimbatore railway station. These generate 400 units of electricity per day. This electricity is being used for railway station needs.
According to a railway official, 100 kg of solar panels have been installed on the roofs of the 1st and 2nd platforms of the Coimbatore railway station. He said, "The electricity generated in this saves up to Rs. 52 thousand per month for the railway station. Accordingly, Rs 6 lakh 27 thousand electricity bill has been saved so far."
