Precautionary measures for Northeast monsoon geared up in Coimbatore district; 18 places declared as high-risk

Coimbatore: As the onset of the Northeast monsoon is imminent, officials in Coimbatore are reviewing the precautionary measures to be taken. They have declared 18 sites in the district as potentially dangerous.



Coimbatore: As the onset of the Northeast monsoon is imminent, officials in Coimbatore are reviewing the precautionary measures to be taken. They have declared 18 sites in the district as potentially dangerous.

While the Northeast monsoon has started in many districts of Tamil Nadu, it is yet to arrive in Coimbatore. It is likely to begin in the next few days according to the weather.

In this situation, precautionary measures are being actively prepared on behalf of the district administration ahead of the Northeast monsoon.

An official with the District Administration said, "Officers in the rank of Deputy Collector have been appointed as superintendents for each taluk in Coimbatore district to deal with the Northeast monsoon. Under their guidance, disaster management drills have been conducted in the respective taluks. In addition, low-lying areas that are prone to rainwater stagnation and other dangerous areas have been identified.

Accordingly, 11 places in Mettupalayam, 1 in Anaimalai, 3 in Valparai and 3 in Perur area have been identified as dangerous sites. For people whose houses get flooded with rain water, 31 temporary camps have been set up.

Volunteers have been appointed in each taluk to immediately report the details of rain damage to government officials. All precautionary measures have been taken to avoid damage that can be caused by the rains."
