Pollachi: For the past 60 years, rain water and sewer water from Pollachi town and adjoining areas flow into the Zameen Uthukkuli-Krishna pond. The water collected, thus far has been used by farmers in the area for irrigation.

The stagnant water from this pond flows through Zameen Muthur, Sellandi Gounderpudur, Ramapattinam and the water source fills 19 check dams, 396 wells and 1,897 bore wells. In addition, thousands of acres of agricultural land are being irrigated with the help of this water from Krishna water channel.

In this situation, the government has decided to set up a sewage treatment plant at the old cattle market site and reroute the treated sewage water to move to an alternative location, as part of the underground sewerage project.

Condemning the move, in the past the farmers from the region who benefit from the water channel urged to withdraw the project, as their farm lands will be directly impacted. If the sewage water is treated and redirected to another location, it will directly impact acres of agricultural land, they said.

Following which, the works were suspended temporarily. However, the farmers are enraged, as the works have re-commenced, now.

A petition regarding the same has been submitted to the Collector and the Municipal Commissioner urging to retain the sewage water from Pollachi area belongs to the Krishna pond as it was done for the past 60 years, they said in the petition.

Farmers have strongly urged that the government should revoke its plan to treat the wastewater and redirect it to an alternative location.
