Coimbatore: According to social welfare officials 58 child marriages have been stopped in Coimbatore district since last January.
Last year, 53 child marriages were stopped. Five more child marriages have been stopped in the current year than last year. Officials said child marriages are stopped based on complaints received by the Child Protection Unit.
Not only are they stopped, but the children who are rescued are constantly monitored by the Department of Social Welfare until they are of marriageable age. The rescued are advised to come in person once a week to the union, municipal and corporation offices for signing.
The main reason for this is the increase in the number of child marriages that are stopped annually in Coimbatore. Authorities informed that awareness is being created about the Child Marriage Prohibition Act and the Child Protection Unit in villages and urban areas.
