New Delhi: India one of the dozen countries where killers of journalists mostly go scot free

New Delhi: According to the Global Impunity Index 2020 prepared by the Committee to Protect Journalists, India is one of the 12 countries that does not fare well in prosecuting killers of journalists.

CPJ has released a report titled Getting Away with Murder on Wednesday which states that the index "spotlights countries where journalists are singled out for murder and their killers go free.”

With 17 unresolved murders this year, India's ranking has worsened to 12th from from 13th last year and 14th in 2018. Somalia, Syria and Iraq are ranked top three. India's neighbouring countries, Pakistan and Bangladesh, have been ranked 9th and 10th, respectively.

CPJ began recording journalist murders in 1992 and India is one of the countries that has featured on the index every year.

Aliya Iftikhar, senior Asia researcher at the CPJ, said, “India has consistently been on the list in recent years. And that’s because since 1992 at least 36 journalists have been murdered and we have only seen convictions in two of those cases. And that sets a really alarming precedent.”
