Coimbatore: As the COVID infections are on the rise in Kerala, the health department is keeping a close watch on the Coimbatore district check posts along the TN Kerala border.

The rate of COVID infections in Coimbatore has been declining for the past few weeks due to drastic action taken by the Coimbatore District Administration.

Currently up to 300 people are diagnosed with coronavirus infection daily. Thousands of people are infected daily in Kerala. Although E-passes are mandatory for coming to Tamil Nadu from other states, many people from Kerala pass the check posts and come to Coimbatore without E-passes. Thus there is an increased risk of coronavirus infection in Coimbatore.

With this in mind, the district administration, along with the police and the health departments, has intensified surveillance work at 14 check posts in the district, including Walayar, Velanthavalam, Meenatchipuram and Anaikatti. The district health department said, "Several vehicles pass through this road daily. Those entering Coimbatore from Kerala are allowed only if they have E-passes."

Those without E-passes are denied entry and for those with symptoms of cold, cough or fever, their address details are collected by the health department and a coronavirus examination is done immediately. Surveillance work has been intensified by the forest department to prevent people from entering the forest and entering Coimbatore without coming through the check post.

At the same time, those who live on the Kerala border and come to Coimbatore for work every day are not forced for E-passes. Similarly, E-passes are mandatory to enter the tourist spot of Valparai. Those residing in Valparai do not need E-passes. All they have to do is show their Aadhar cards.
