Coimbatore: The barrier rails on the railway underbridge near Veerapandi next to Coimbatore have been damaged, are teetering, and are on the verge of collapsing. Thus, people passing through the area do so with fear.

Thousands of people travel daily from the Veerapandi Pirivu to Veerapandi. This road is used to travel from Veerapandi to Annur and Kovilpalayam. The railway tracks from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam are situated on this stretch.

The road has been designed in such a way that a tunnel is in place at the bottom of the tracks for vehicular traffic. Barrier rails have been set up on both sides of the tunnel to prevent heavy vehicles from entering and getting stuck.

Heavy vehicles, including lorries, sometimes enter the tunnel and collide with the barrier rails, causing damage to them. As a result of this, the rails that were damaged several months ago, are now teetering and look like collapsing anytime. This causes fear to the people who pass by.

Newton, a resident of the area, said: "The safety rails have been this way for more than six months. They are teetering and are on the verge of a collapse. Officials should take action to rectify this problem before anything untoward happens."
Railway officials said, "Steps have been taken to repair the damaged barrier rails immediately."
