A fire broke out at a coir factory at Malaipalayam village next to Coimbatore at around 4 pm yesterday.

The fire department was notified following which firefighters arrived at the scene and made a herculean effort to bring the fire under control.

Residents of the area said the fire broke out during Ayudha Puja at the company. They accused that the company had stocked coir more than the permitted limits, which caused the fire accident. The fire caused smoke to billow up to Senjerimalai, about three kilometers from where the company was located .

The Palladam Fire Department was notified and only two vehicles were called in to put out the blaze. They also said that the high stock of coconut fiber was the main reason for the fire.
