Coimbatore: Flower and fruit prices go up in Coimbatore due to Ayudha and Saraswathi Pujas. Jasmine is being sold for Rs.1000 per kg.

The Ayutha Pooja is scheduled to be celebrated across the country on Sunday and the Saraswati Puja on Monday. Due to this, the sale of flowers, fruits, jaggery and puffed rice is in full swing in Coimbatore.



Public are crowding to buy flowers at the temporary flower market set up at the Devanga School Grounds in Coimbatore. Price of flowers also went up with jasmine being sold for Rs. 1000 per kg. Merchants and farmers are rejoicing at the rise. Coimbatore flower market traders said that they usually sell only 40 to 50 tonnes of flowers but 100 tons of flowers were brought for sale yesterday ahead of the festival. In Coimbatore, a kilo of jasmine costs Rs. 1000, champak Rs. 200-300, kozhikondai Rs. 160, vadamalli Rs.70, arali Rs. 340-400, chendumalli Rs.50-110, sevvanthi Rs 120, rose Rs 300 and lotus for Rs 15.



The prices of fruits have also increased in the city. A kilo of apple is sold for Rs. 130, pomegranate Rs. 180, sweet lime Rs. 40 and orange Rs. 50. At present most of the fruits are brought to Coimbatore for sale from places including Nagpur, Shimla and Delhi.

Apart from this, a pair of banana plants sells for Rs. 40 to Rs. 50, jaggery is sold for Rs. 55 per kg and puffed rice is being sold for Rs. 15 per pucca.
