Coimbatore: DMK Chief and Opposition Leader M.K. Stalin on Friday condemned the arrest of Simplicity News Portal Founder D. Andrew Sam Raja Pandian for publishing news articles about the problems being faced by healthcare professionals and alleged corruption in ration shops.

In a statement, the DMK President and opposition leader, Stalin alleged that local MLA and Minister S.P. Velumani are using police for their own benefits to debunk criticism against him.

"The Government is not supporting press people who are risking their lives during pandemic. But on the other hand is trying to suppress them for writing facts that was initially said out loud by DMK MLA from Singanallur Constituency N. Karthick,” he said.

Talking about the incident, Stalin stated that Police has harassed journalists Jerald and Balaji of Simplicity news portal for hours at the Police Station before arresting Andrew Sam, Founder of the portal.

He further has stated that MLA N. Karthick released a statement condemning Minister S.P. Velumani for not working in the field and taking care of hundreds of sanitary workers and doctors who work in the field without proper food.

“Already AIADMK Minister Rajendra Balaji is involved in acts such as these to suppress the media. This incident carried out by Minister SP Velumani reveals that the AIADMK is not interested in helping press people during pandemic, but is happy with using its powers to suppress them. This is against democracy and DMK condemns it,” he opined.
