Colleges in 16 districts asked to affiliate with women's university

Thirteen years after inception, the Karnataka State Women's University at Vijayapura is opening its doors to women's colleges in 16 districts for affiliation.

Vice-chancellor Professor Sabiha said the higher education department has decided to affiliate government, private and autonomous colleges with the university from 2017-18.

Such a move in 2013 was met with opposition. At present, 63 colleges are affiliated with the first women's university in the state which offers under-graduation and post-graduation degrees in arts, social science, science and technology , education, commerce and management along with PhD and MPhil courses.

"One of the major challenges faced by prospective affiliated colleges is connectivity and distance of the university from the rest of the state. Many colleges in other cities districts found it more convenient to affiliate themselves with general universities closer to them," the VC said.

"We have UG and PG-level courses where geriatric care and parenting skills are offered as credit courses. By collaborating with 10 leading institutions across India, we are able to provide our students with greater prospects for future," she added.

With an increase in the gross enrolment rate (GER) from 23,000 in 2013-14 to 29,900 in 2016-17, the university is operating in 13 districts in north Karnataka. "We have issued the notification to all women's colleges to affiliate with the university. Though government colleges will definitely be affiliated, private ones have been given six months to respond. Autonomous colleges, however, have the option of either being in or not," said Sabiha.

More vacancies Increasing

vacancies in teaching and non-teaching positions is a major challenge for the university . "We are losing out on the talented faculty. We will now frame the curriculum for affiliated colleges. We are hoping to receive the maximum number of affiliations to take women's education to a greater level,'' she added.
