Couple, child escape unhurt as Bullet goes up in flam

A three-member family, including a child, had a miraculous escape when their Bullet motorbike skidded and burst into flames on Kamarajar Salai on Wednesday morning.

Based on witness accounts, police said Shivakumar of Washermenpet and his wife were on their way to drop their eight-year-old daughter Charushree at school in MRC Nagar when the accident took place.

As they neared Kannagi statue, a dog suddenly dashed across the road in front of their bike. Shivakumar, caught by surprise, applied brakes to avoid hitting the dog and the vehicle skid. The three fell off the vehicle and were getting up when the bike caught fire.

Passersby managed to pull the trio away from the bike and they were rushed to Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital where doctors said their condition is good. A few people at the accident spot tried to sprinkle water to put out the fire but failed as petrol had splashed all over and the flames were intense.

Soon, police and a team of the Mylapore fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the scene and doused the flames. The bike was completely burned and was removed from the spot.

"He applied brakes to avoid hitting the dog. If he had not applied brakes, things would have been different," Prakash, a witness, later told police.

Traffic came to a standstill for while following the accident. Police registered a case and are investigating.
