Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu and Kerala borders on the Western Ghats have been experiencing torrential rains this past week.
The heavy rainfall in Upper Bhavani, Avalanche and Kundha has necessitated release of water from the dams. Pillur Dam is reaching its maximum capacity owing to rainwater from the Kerala borders and rainfall in catchment areas.
The Pillur Dam has almost reached its full capacity of 100 ft over the past five days and hence excess water is gradually being released into the Bhavani river. This has to led to flooding in areas near Mettupalayam's Vanabadrakaliamman temple, Sammana Water House and Bhavani overbridge. The people in affected areas are being evacuated to safer zones by revenue officials.

The Revenue Minister R P Udayakumar inspected the Bhavani river in Mettupalayam. While addressing the media, he said, "The heavy rainfall in catchment areas has led to increased water release from Pillur Dam which is causing the flooding of Bhavani river and Mettur Dam. The revenue officials are carefully monitoring water levels, day and night and are on high alert. On the orders of the Chief Minister, necessary precautionary measures have been taken for any emergency and relief measures will be underway quickly with all departments being on stand by."
MLA A K Selvaraj, MLA O K Chinnaraj, Amma Peravai Secretary Nasar, District Secretary Vanmathi Sait and other officials were also present at the media briefing.
