Coimbatore: In a tragic incident, a 51-year-old man was reportedly killed by a wild elephant while walking on the ghat road near Ganga Chamber in Anaikatti on Saturday.

According to sources, the deceased N. Muralidharan was reportedly on his way to his home at Kottathurai in Kerala after drinking liquor at the tasmac outlet in Mankarai.

He was travelling along with N. Sellan (49) near Ganga Chambers at Moongilpallam, when a herd of elephants had crossed the road to drink water.

Unable to spot the animal in time because of the intoxication, Muralidharan had reportedly collided with the elephants dying on the spot. His partner escaped with injuries.

Irked by the death caused by liquor, activists have demanded that tasmac outlets be removed from hill towns like Anaikatti where elephant movement is high.

“The Kerala State Government has banned liquor sale in Attapadi region and this should be followed in the Anaikatti region as well to avoid more deaths,” claimed an activist.
