Consumer complaint: Coco-Cola fined Rs.1 lakh; Court orders to provide healthy food for 100 children

Coimbatore: Popular beverage company, Coco-Cola was fined Rs. 1 lakh by the Consumer Court today after hearing the case registered against the company by a 21-year old, Poornima in the year 2014, when she found a bit of plastic paper in her drink.


Coimbatore: Popular beverage company, Coco-Cola was fined Rs. 1 lakh by the Consumer Court today after hearing the case registered against the company by a 21-year old, Poornima in the year 2014, when she found a bit of plastic paper in her drink. 

Poornima from CMC Colony in Coimbatore purchased a 200 ml Coco Cola bottle priced at Rs.12 from a local grocery shop in her neighbourhood. While consuming, she was shocked to find a plastic paper in her drink and immediately returned to the shop to complain. The shopkeeper had asked her to pose her question to the Coco-Cola company. Poornima took a stand and registered a case against the company in the Consumer Court. 

The Consumer Court which investigated the case slapped a fine of Rs. 75000 on Coca Cola for manufacturing a low-quality product and imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000 on the shopkeeper for not checking the quality of the items he sold.

The petitioner, Poornima received Rs. 3000 towards case handling expenses. As per the request of the petitioner, the consumer court asked the company to provide healthy food including fruits for 100 children in the region for a month.
