The Nilgiris: Wild elephants have encamped in the tribal villages of Mooparkadu and Palaniappa estates in Coonoor, causing fear among villagers. The wild elephants have damaged water pipes in the villages and forced villagers to stay indoors, thus disrupting their daily lives.

Over 100 tribals live in these estates but due to the rains in Nilgiris for the past few days, elephants from the forests of Velliyangadu, Mulli, Ketti and Baralikadu have entered the tea estates in search of food and water. The herd of elephants along with their calves have encamped in the villages.
Repair of the damaged water pipes are also being done slowly in constant fear of elephant attack. The children from the villages have been unable to attend school and villagers have not turned up at work owing to fear of the wild elephants encamped nearby.
The villagers have urged forest officials to quickly chase away the elephants back into the forests in order to resume their normal daily routines.
