Coimbatore: On the orders of the District Collector K Rajamani, manufacturing units of single-use plastics, two industries which manufactured plastic-coated paper cups, unwoven bag units in Perur, 2 bag-manufacturing units and one unwoven bag unit in Coimbatore South were inspected after which electricity supply was cut off and the units sealed. Thereafter, the District Collector issued a strict warning to industries that manufacture plastics illegally.

The District Collector had earlier warned of strict action against those who use plastic. A press release by the District Administration had communicated that the Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy had announced a ban on plastics in Tamil Nadu at the June 5, 2018 assembly meeting. He said that under Section 110, one-time use of disposable plastics will be banned from January 1, 2019. The GO 84 for Environment and Forest Department was issued the directive for implementing this on June 25, 2018. To create awareness on the ban of plastics, the TN Chief Minister had released short films and messages through the internet, mobiles and other medium on August 23, 2018.
The awareness of abolishing one-time use plastic was consistently created in various phases. Following this, at the review meeting that was held on May 29 this year, the District Collector K Rajamani ordered the Administration Department and the Food Protection Department to continuously inspect and stop the use of plastics. On May 13, a stakeholders meeting was arranged by the Coimbatore Corporation to reiterate the punishment that would be meted out for those using and manufacturing plastics.
