Safe transportation of septage is one of the key factors in Faecal Sludge Management. This part of the value chain is broadly taken care of by the private sector in cities.
Septage operators and their workforce equipped with vacuum trucks often empty the pits and septic tank on demand. Ideally, they should take the load to some designated place for safe treatment and disposal but often rules are thrown to winds.
However, due to the absence of adequate treatment facilities, enforcement and robust monitoring system, often, most of the trucks were found indulging in open dumping, which is a severe threat to the environment and public health.
The operative guideline for the septage management of local bodies in TamilNadu (2014) though recommend using GPS-based monitoring system to have a better desludging service and a check on illegal dumping.
Following the Guideline, the City, Technical Support Unit (City TSU) of Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme (TNUSSP) has come up with an idea of piloting GPS tracking on two septage carrying trucks of Coimbatore.
