Coimbatore: In a heart-breaking incident, a 61-year old farmer committed suicide in front of the Indian Bank on Variety Hall road, on Thursday.
Initial reports say that Boopathy, a farmer from Konganapuram in Salem along with three of his friends had jointly procured a loan from the Indian Bank in Coimbatore to set up a dairy farm.
Since the undertaking did not yield profits, they were unable to pay the loan dues on time. The mounting pressure to pay the dues left Boopathy very depressed.
Today, Boopathy had approached the bank to pay part of the dues and release his documents which he had given as security deposit. However, the bank manager allegedly refused to release his documents and urged him to also pay the dues of his partners for the release of his documents.
Vexed by the bank manager's conditions, Boopathy consumed poison in front of the bank and died. His body has been taken to the Government Hospital for post-mortem. The death of a farmer in front of a bank shocked onlookers.
