The district administration in Nilgiris had banned 19 varieties of plastic from being used. Shopkeepers in the district have been lending their support to the ban by refraining from using disposable one-time use plastics. The Ooty Municipality officials have constantly been spreading awareness on the plastic ban and have maintained a strict vigil in the district.
Now with the commendable initiative taken by meat sellers in Ooty, a few meat sellers in Coonoor too are looking to avoid plastic to package meat and instead use banana leaves or newspapers. One of the meat sellers opined, "We are finding it difficult to source banana leaves and it will be of great help if the district administration can make arrangements for the leaves or provide an alternative."
