Coimbatore : CPM and CITU have strongly condemned the steep increase in the property tax by Coimbatore Corporation which is being effected even before the Local Bodies’ poll, which are imminent
Alleging that the move would amount to fleecing the common man, CPM District Secretary V. Ramamurthy, said it is unfair to collect the revised tax which came into implementation from April 2018, in the absence of an elected council.
In a press release issued here, V. Ramamurthy said that "such decisions cannot be made all of a sudden. He expressed that the marginal and small scale traders in the city are already facing many financial troubles with GST and the 100% increase in property tax will be a big blow for them. Hence he demanded the immediate cancellation of the new property taxes levied by the civic body".
“The Marxist party will gather support from the public and protest against the Coimbatore Corporation if they threaten to disconnect water and electricity for not paying taxes by the city residents” Ramamurthy said
CITU District President and Former Zonal Head C. Padmanabhan said, “Like never before in the history of the state, the taxes which was increased once in 10 years in a range of 5% to 10% for residential properties and a maximum of 25% for business properties have now been drastically increased without the consent of local bodies. This would adversely affect the people”.
“It is injustice meted out to the city residents to collect the revised tax from the public even for the houses built on January 2019. He said that the decision arrived at without the new local bodies in place is completely unacceptable” he further noted.
He also urged the Tamil Nadu government to take necessary action against the unfair taxes by the Corporation which has not shown any kind of infrastructural or other improvements in any of the recently merged areas like Vilankurichi, Sanganoor, and Ganapathy and in the areas merged in the third phase including Saravanampatti, Kaundampalayam, Chinnavedampatti and 9 other panchayats.
