Coimbatore: Social media is proving too costly for wildlife conservation as a video of a Black Leopard also known as the Black Panther running along with a leopard is portrayed as being shot at the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR).
The video and information that was also taken up by some mainstream news channels in Tamil Nadu and Telengana went viral for a few weeks in the internet.

It claimed that the black leopard was spotted at STR for the first time.
However, senior officials with STR have denied spotting a black leopard anywhere in the reserve, which borders along with Mudumalai and Bandipur Tiger Reserves.
“The footage is more than a year old and has been shot at the Kabini Forests in Nagerhole Tiger Reserve in Karnataka. It is being frequently floated in social media over and over again claiming to be shot in STR, which is a lie,” the official added.
