Coimbatore: Celebrating the second year anniversary of getting recognized as the State’s first Urban Biodiversity Conservation Zone, the Singanallur Lake became the first lake in Coimbatore to be fitted with an exclusive Weather Station.
The Weather Station, sponsored by SSVM Institutions, was inaugurated at the lake bund on Tuesday by District Collector K. Rajamani, in the presence of CCMC Commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath.
Deputy Commissioner S. Prasanna Ramasamy, Wildlife Photographer T.R. Arundhavaselvan, volunteers of the Centre for Urban Biodiversity Conservation and Education (CUBE) and schools students from the Masakkalipalayam Corporation Middle School and Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Vidyalaya School took part.
The first of its kind Weather Station installed at the lake has ten censors to collect multiple data at the same time.
Parameters including Air Temperature, Humidity, Wind Velocity, Wind Direction, Atmospheric Pressure, Solar Radiation, Evaporation, Rainfall, Soil Moisture and Soil Temperature will be recorded at the station on a 24/7 basis.
The volunteers can take the data from the instrument at any time using a laptop.
Plans are also being made to connect the instrument with mobile devices through mobile applications and access the data from anywhere.
“A special pan would be kept at the station, which would collect details of evaporation from the lake. This data would later be converted for the entire lake area,” said a volunteer from CUBE.
He further added that the data collected would be helpful for the people of Coimbatore, and it would help for the conservation activities in the lake.
Later, officials inspected the lake and interacted with the students. During the interaction, the students were advised to focus on nature education on par with their academics.
Two students Keerthana, a seventh-grade student and Gowrishankar, a grade eight student, both from the Masakkalipalayam Corporation Middle School shared their nature trail experience at the lake.
They said that the lake environment provided them with an opportunity to learn more about birds and butterflies.
