Coimbatore: Commemorating World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), the Coimbatore Parenting Network (CPN), an active peer group on Facebook that has over 4000 members has organized a giant wheel exhibition which will be held on August 3 and 4, at the Prozone Mall, Saravanampatti to create awareness on breastfeeding.
The World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) promoted by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), WHO and UNICEF is celebrated worldwide from August 1 to August 7.
The Trustees of CPN, Minu and Kumudha addressed the media at the Coimbatore Press Club today saying, "As a step to create awareness on breastfeeding, a giant wheel exhibition is being organized at the Prozone Mall, Saravanamapatti on August 3 and 4, where all the pre-used toys of children will be kept for sale and the revenue from it will be used for social services.
The Trustees also added that pictures on the topic "Acham Illai" denoting breastfeeding will be uploaded on social media for seven days. "The hope is that this will create and educate the importance and benefits of breast milk among the public. More than last year, this year there has been more breast milk donation which is in turn being given to the abandoned infants at the Coimbatore Government Hospital."
The Trustees also said that steps were being taken to create awareness on breast milk donation among college students and most colleges have agreed to support the initiative. "The lack of awareness and myths surrounding breastfeeding are the reasons for dearth in breast milk donation," they added.
The Giant Wheel Exhibition will also provide a platform for mothers to dance while holding their babies close to them. The awareness program will be held from 11 am to 9 pm that weekend.
