An event was organised by CPI (M) on Monday here to show their disapproval to the central government against the new education policy draft, the CPI (M) members apprised that they would be sending signatures of people from the city against NEP.
Addressing the media, G. Ramakrishnan, State Secretary of CPI (M) said "Implementation of NEP will damage the entire fabric of education system and the secular fabric of this country."
Lashing out at both the ruling AIADMK-led state government and the Centre, the Senior Communist leader vehemently opposed the NEP and claimed that students of government schools will be largely affected by the policy. Hence, he apprised that his party would collect signatures from the members of the public and political parties against NEP and send it to the centre.
He noted that so far, 50,000 signatures have been collected in Coimbatore and with extension of the deadline, they aim to collect more signatures.
"As the last date for public option has been extended from July 31 to August 15, we will be sending the signatures by August 10", he added.
He apprised that CPM will be holding a massive protest against Coimbatore Corporation for awarding the drinking water distribution contract to a French company, named 'Suez'.
Clarifying his stance on the union of CPI and CPI (M), he said there were no such talks going about uniting two communist parties. However, it is the need of the hour to set aside the differences and stand as one against NEP.
Several communist leaders, cadres and members of public took part in the meeting.
The Ministry of Human Resources Development unveiled the draft education policy on May 31 and invited public comments till July 31. Following requests to extend the deadline, the centre has extended the deadline till August 15.
