Coimbatore: The youngest Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu, the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) has once again made a mark in the national level by being selected as the Best Tiger Reserve in India in terms of “maximum improvement" since the last cycle of estimation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the award to Field Director of STR V. Naganathan in the presence of Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Forests, Environment and Climate Change (MoEFCC) at New Delhi today, during the release of Tiger Estimation Results – 2018.

STR, which was born in December 2013, began to see a healthy rise in tiger population and was proclaimed “Good” under the Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) report of 2014. The reserve had made stringent efforts to conserve its wide range of wild animals starting from the tiger to leopards, elephants, hyenas and jackals along with many other smaller mammals. STR holds upto 60 tigers and 800 elephants and hosts all the four species of vultures according to the report.

In the report, the reserve has been stated “Very Good” and given 79.29 MEE points, much higher than the 61.29 points it had got during the third cycle (2014).

“STR has been selected for showing hightest increment in the quadrennial MEE exercise,” an official letter from the MoEFCC read.

Lying between Western and the Eastern Ghats, the reserve provides a healthy habitat and connectivity for animals to move between Coimbatore, Erode Forest divisions and tiger reserves including Mudumalai and Bandipur.

Overall, Tamil Nadu has also seen a rise of tiger population from 229 in 2014 to 264 in 2018. The population in the Western Ghats states has increased from 776 to 981.

The all India status on the other hand has seen a doubling of numbers in the last 12 years. The population has risen from 1411 in 2006 to 2226 in 2014 to 2967 in 2018, a feat expected in 2022.

Releasing the report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that both Development and Environment were important for the growth of the nation. “It is possible to strike a balance between the two,” he said.

He also added assured that India will have healthier homes for humans and animals.
