Coimbatore: The special team of police on Monday nabbed two men who were involved in axing and smuggling three sandalwood trees from Murugan Mills in Saibaba Colony here, last week.
The accused have been identified as Govindaraj and Valarasu from Puludhikuttai village near Vazhappadi.
Following repeated incidents of sandalwood trees being axed within city limits, a special team under the direct supervision of Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Perumal was formed to nab the gang.
"We have arrested two important people of the gang who were involved in sandalwood smuggling in this region. Soon, we will arrest the kingpin behind the smuggling racket," stated a senior police officer.
The Assistant Commissioner, Somashekar, Inspectors Sujatha and Muthumani were part of the special team. Senior police officials have appreciated the efforts of the team.
The police have also registered a case and are in search of more people who are reportedly a part of this gang. Further investigation is underway.
