The Nilgiris: In a concerted effort to battle Diptheria that is usually prevalent in mountain regions, Porkodi, the Co-Director of the Health Department reported that the Nilgiris District is producing 80,000 doses of vaccines for Diptheria.

"Diptheria is fast spreading only in mountain villages. Hence, the Nilgiris District Health Department is taking various steps to prevent it. Thus far, nobody has been affected by Diptheria in the district. School students aged between 7 to 18 years are prone to this disease.
It is to be noted that fever and throat pain are the initial symptoms of Diptheria," stated Porkodi. She added that the Chief Education Officer had been ordered to set up an individual treatment camp in all schools int he district.
She also added that the District Health Department had asked for evidence from some private schools that claim to have received the vaccination privately. "As per reports, it is said that the students of mountain villages do not take these vaccinations. The lack of awareness about the vaccination can be the reason for this disease spreading easily.
To prevent Diptheria from entering the Nilgiris District, the medical team is closely monitoring the entry gates of District borders such as Burliyar, Kunjapanai and other places," revealed the Co-Director of the Health Departement of Nilgiris District.
