Coimbatore: Protesting against the restrictions imposed on the Rapido two-wheeler operations, the captains who operate the bike taxis have submitted a petition to the District Collector to allow the operation of Rapido under Motor vehicles Act.

Rapid Bike taxi services are being provided in Salem, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy.

However, call taxi drivers and tourist vehicle operators have been protesting against the services on the premise that Rapido service providers do not have proper permission or authorization to operate in cities like Coimbatore.

The zonal transport officers are also inspecting such vehicles and continue to levy fine.

The Rapido Captains complained that the services headquartered in Bangalore has been advertising through social media and there are lots of people downloading the app and using the services.

Since there are fines and confiscation of vehicles affecting our services it is all the more difficult to operate in such conditions.

Adding that the part-time working facilities has enabled the students and graduates to work and make a livelihood the petitioners have noted that operation of Rapido should be brought under the purview of the Motor Vehicles Act.

They said there are over 25,000 Rapido captains in Tamil Nadu and over 2000 in Coimbatore depending upon the services for livelihood.
