Coimbatore : With doubts rising over the death of a 14-year-old elephant that succumbed to illness at Chinnathadagam, officials have claimed that the animal had died due to intestinal worms.
The elephant was first spotted by local people when it was standing on revenue land near bushes at the foothills Maruthamkarai (Moolakadu) forest area in Chinnathadagam.
The animal was standing there without much movement and foresters were called in to treat the animal. A team headed by Dr. Ashokan attempted their best revive the elephant since Thursday evening.
However, the animal failed to recuperate and collapsed around 6.30 owing to sickness. It further succumbed to the ailment around seven.
A post mortem was conducted and the carcass was buried nearby.
